The knitting machine in the Hacklab is a standard-gauge electronic machine. It is an Empisal Knitmaster SK580 that has been hacked by Colin and Cicely. The hack enables you to send an image file (PNG) over wifi, which it will then proceed to knit.
Instructions on operating the image upload feature can be found on Colin's blog: https://pointinthecloud.com/2025-05-25-194409.html.
Note that the machine is not totally automatic: You will still need to cast on manually (e.g. using 'e-wrap' method), move the carriage back and forth to knit each row, and then manually cast off the last row. Some familiarity with the operation (and troubleshooting) of knitting machines is therefore recommended :).
The machine is usually stored in G14 and the accessories will likely be in a really useful box in G1 under the electronics bench.
This manual describes the parts and how to set it up: https://mkmanuals.com/knitmaster-580-knitting-machine-instruction-manual.html.
Here is a good video on how to use a knitting machine to make a basic hat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yERe7UbMBk. The machine is not the same, but the instructions are transferable. You will need to use finer yarn though as the machine in the video is a mid-gauge machine which uses thicker yarn. You are welcome to use any of the yarns that are in the accessories box.
Note that when doing image knitting/two-colour patterns, it is recommended to place yarn separators at either edge of the work.
The machine is a Freecycle rescue so it has a few dings and broken bits. Fortunately these are largely cosmetic and the machine works. It would be nice to fix it up a bit e.g.:
- Check sponge bar is OK
- Straighten out sinker plate post… it is a bit bent
- 3D print new foot
- Mount screen
- Put power supply back on left side?
More sophisticated features could also be added to the hack.
