Rubbish and Recycling

We're trying to keep our environmental footprint to a minimum. Here's what we can recycle in the lab/at Summerhall:

Material Location in the lab Final destination
Glass Blue box in the G1 kitchen area Glass bins in the Summerhall courtyard
Cans, plastics, paper, card and cardboard (see below) The green box in the G1 kitchen area Red-lidded “Dry mixed recyclables” bins in the courtyard
WEEE (electricals/electronics) Box marked “WEEE” (TODO: box and location to be determined) A member will periodically take the WEEE to the local recycling centre
Tassimo coffee pods/packaging Bin behind Tassimo machine Ship to Terracyle (ask Al for details)

Other waste unfortunately has to be landfilled, unless we can find other recycling solutions. There are black-lidded landfill bins in the Summerhall courtyard.

If you see the in-lab recycling is full, please empty it to the bins in the courtyard. The same goes for the landfill bins in the lab!

✔ What can be recycled in the red bins? ✔

  • Paper - e.g. dry paper waste, newspapers, office paper and magazines
  • Cardboard – e.g. corrugated cardboard, cereal boxes and card
  • Metal cans – e.g. clean, empty drinks cans and food tins
  • Plastic – e.g. packaging films, rinsed out milk bottles, empty drinks bottles & clean salad trays, rinsed out margarine tubs & microwaveable meal trays

✘ What **can't** be recycled in the red bins? ✘

  • Black bags (because our drivers cannot see if it is recyclable material in the bag)
  • Waxed paper cups (takeaway cups from most high street coffee chains)
  • Crisp packets and sweet wrappers
  • Food and canteen waste
  • Liquids
  • Polystyrene
  • Glass and ceramics
  • Wood
  • Textiles or lengths of strapping
  • Hard and rigid plastics (e.g. window frames, pipes, drums or other bulky non-compactable plastic items)
  • Containers with any residue of food or hazardous material (e.g. paint tins or bleach bottles)
