Breadboards are used to prototype electronic circuits. They allow for easy inserting and removing of components and wires. Certain strips of holes are connected together electrically, which allow you to form connections between the components and wires.
There are two long rails down either side which are normally used for power, not signals. The red line is for your positive power (+5V for this workshop) and the black/blue line is for ground.
